How would you feel when you walk into a classroom that has turned into a movie theater? At free play this morning, we started lining up the chairs and putting numbers on them like in a movie theater. Before we knew it, we have called it a “movie night”. Here’s a peak into our conversations.
K: Here is your ticket (passing out a card from a puzzle set).
Ke: And a key. You need to go get inside.
Ak: What movie do you want to watch?
Ke: Okay! Show is starting! (then started to sing “Gurenge”)
Ak: Who wants to watch Elsa? Raise your hand!
Ko: Sit down, please.
Cr: I want popcorn!
A: Me, too! I want popcorn, too! Oh,
so good!
Then A went to get a clipboard. He walked to each of his friends and said,
Ak: Please write your name here and tell me what movie you want to see.
Ki: Okay, it’s starting! 3, 2,1!
Ak: No, not yet.
Ko: Sit down, please.
Ak: We have Ninja movie, too, but it’s a little bit scary.
Ri: I want Ninja Go.
A: When is the movie going to start?
Ki: First, it’s Kimetsu no Yaiba.
Ak: We’ll start the movie night. Li, it’s movie night! Next movie will be My Little Pony!
Kei: I don’t know My Little Pony.
When Y and L heard Ki, they started to sing My Little Pony song. We hope the song helped.
Movie night was a success! We loved getting ushered to our seat in the “theater” and watching our friends on a live performance! It seems like we can’t wait to have another movie night soon. At quiet time, we already made some tickets for another movie night!
OTHER MORNING ACTIVITIES
We were told that there is a special guest who is coming to visit us tomorrow. Somebody whispered, “I think it’s the oni because it is already setsubun”. K immediately replied, “But I think today is the real setsubun day”. Vieda agreed and went on to say, “K is right but perhaps the oni is scheduled to come to Ohana tomorrow, so we’ll have ours tomorrow”. Well, if the oni or ogre is coming, then we need to wear a special mask! Our teachers gave us a long-colored paper and art collage materials. We enjoyed decorating our mask to make it look cool and adorable! We are so ready to throw “beans” and say our chant, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!”.
We also tried building shapes and towers using small cube blocks. Ak, Ch, Li and K teamed up to build a tower with lots of these small cube blocks. And they did! They were so proud to see how their tower looked like. On another table, K had such a wonderful time cutting and taping hearts on a ribbon to prepare for our Valentine’s Day party.
Do you still remember Transpiration? While several of our friends were busy having a “movie night”, Y and L volunteered to work on Transpiration (our Elmer, the Elephant-inspired project). They glued on the big ears, long trunk, tail, and eyes. How about the feet? They looked at Elmer, the Elephant book and counted its feet. After that, they drew and cut two pieces of cardboard box and attached them as feet. As they tried to tape the feet and ears on the inside, they discovered how fun it was to be inside the box! Li said, “How I wish we can always go inside Transpiration!”. Inspired by L’s words, K took a small box and asked, “Can I make this into a house so I can also get inside of it?” Other children were inspired to see K’s house so they asked him if they could also work on the house. K, Ke and Ko were giggling as they mixed paints and painted the house.
STORY TIME: Turnover Tuesday by Phyllis Root, Illustrated by Helen Craig
Vieda read the title for today’s story time and asked if any of us can write the first letter of the words “turnover” and “Tuesday”. K and R confidently raised their hands and wrote a big /T/ on the board. Great job, K and R
Have you ever heard about a kind of bread called turnovers? None of us have, except Nimo! Of course, we got excited to ask Nimo about turnovers!
Ke: How do you make it?
Ak: What do you put inside?
Ch: Where did it come from?
K: Can you make it from origami?
K: Can you make 2,900 with origami?
Nimo shared with us that we can put anything inside the turnovers. From strawberries, apples and plums to chocolate and sausages! Sounds so delicious! Just as we were wondering how turnovers look like, Vieda showed us a picture of an apple turnover! Yum! Yum! Yum!
The story talked about a girl named Bonnie Bumble who baked 6 plum turnovers. We giggled when we heard that Bonnie Bumble turned over and went upside down after eating plum turnovers! She went out to milk cows and gather eggs while being on upside down! She looked so funny! We got so excited when Vieda asked us if we could be like Bonnie Bumble and turnover as well! Nimo showed us how to do it and gave us some helpful hints to stand upside down like the girl in our story. Most of us wanted to try it too! K said that “Maybe we can practice at home!”. A was so happy about being upside down and asked the teachers, “Let’s show Mom and Dad this one (turnover)”. It was not easy to be upside down like the bread turnovers, but certainly it was so much fun!
GROUP PROJECT
Talking about storybooks, we learned what “illustrated by” means. It refers to someone who draws or paints the pictures for the story. Yesterday, we played “writers” of a storybook as we changed the plot of a story. Today, our hands were full as we started working on the illustrations for our book. It would be lovely to have our stories read during story time once they are finished.
A “movie night” on a “turnover Tuesday” was such a brilliant idea!

Flowers
