Happy Birthday Be!!!
Today we celebrated Be’s special day! When we arrived at class this morning, we saw a big banner saying “Happy Birthday”, along with other party decorations. We all knew that it was Be’s birthday, and that we’d be celebrating later.
Just before the party time, we set our chairs up in rows facing a table and three chairs for Be. We wondered, who were the other two chairs for? Were they for Vieda and Cameron? We all said, “no!”
Be told us that they were for her special guests. Soon after, we called for our special guests to enter the room. It was her mommy and daddy!
They took their seats next to Be and we started our party…
We sang our “hello song” because some of us didn’t remember her parent’s names.
Now we are ready to begin, but can we start yet? We think something is missing…Be’s crown and card! Be chose Hi to place her birthday crown on her head, and Da to give her the birthday card.
Now it was time for a little birthday celebrant trivia. There were three things that we would learn about Be today.
1- What do you want to be when you grow up?
Co: Queen
Da: Policeman
Ar: Fireman
Re: Doctor
Sh: Builder
Time for a hint…
Be: Someone who teaches.
A teacher!
2- What is your favorite food? (Hint – She has this in her lunch every day.)
Da: Cake
Ky: Onigiri
Hi: Broccoli.
Ping pong, ping pong!! Correct!
3- What food do you not like? (Hint – it’s red)
Hi: Tomato
Right!!
It was fun to guess the answers and learn more about Be.
There is something else that our birthday party needs. A cake!
Be’s mom brought out a beautiful cake that she made herself! It looked delicious!
Sh: We can share the cake?
Yes, we can share the cake! We all got to take a piece home with us. Hi shared a concern that the last time we took a piece of cake home with us, it unfortunately got squished in our bags. So today, our teachers put the piece of cake in our empty lunch containers, so that we can enjoy it in its original form.
After Be made a wish and fanned out the candles with her hands, it was time to play a game!
Be asked to play musical chairs to her favorite song, “A Sky Full of Stars.” Her parents joined in the game as well. After several rounds, we were down to the final three participants, Hi, Ka, and Ri. The winner was Ri!
We all received a prize from Be for celebrating her birthday with her. It was a lot of fun to have a party with both of Be’s parents! We all had a great time!
SHOPPING TRIP
While we were learning about maps and our community, we took a walk around the surrounding neighborhood, so that we could make our own map. During that outing, we went to a local stationary shop. At that time, we wanted to buy some things, but we didn’t have money with us. We thought that it would be a great idea to come back another time!
Earlier this week, we made a small origami coin pouch, to hold our money, and asked our parents to give us each ¥500. We had our money in hand and made our way to the shop.
We went inside and looked for something special, which we could buy within our budget. We looked at all kinds of fun stickers, books, pencils, and even toys! When we found something we liked, we tried to find the price tag. We also asked Vieda, Cameron, and Liezel to help us find the prices, when they were hard to locate.
Some of us bought one item with our money, and some of us bought multiple items. Once we calculated the total, we took our items to the register. The kind cashier told us our total, we took our money from our coin purse, and placed it in the money holder on the counter. They placed our items in a bag, and gave us our change and item(s) placed inside a bag along with the receipt. Once we all completed our purchases, we headed back to Ohana to discuss what happened…
What did you buy today?
Ri: Toy food, like potato, hamburger, and water.
Re: Yoyo, like teddy bear. I bought fish, game, origami, dog.
Be: I bought a teddy bear, lollipop.
Sh: A ball dinosaur when you squeeze it, it makes bubbles. And one thing I don’t have, a pouch!
Ka: Small toy, when I touch, it makes bubbles.
Co: Dinosaur. You can squeeze it.
Da: I got the yoyo like you put on the bottom and turn around.
Sh: Last time I had the dreidel with a button!
Hi: Ice cream toy.
Ky: Magic pencil/markers for drawing.
An: Ice cream (toy).
Br: I bought toys. Dinosaur, squeeze it, the bubbles come out.
Ke: Squeeze and bubble dinosaur.
Iz: Squeeze toy. Something for bath, ball. You put in bath and something happens.
Hi: Squeeze dinosaur. I want to buy big one, but too much money, so I buy 2 small one.
Ka: Pretend fish. I can catch fish.
Ar: Same as Hi.
We all had a great time shopping today! It was fun to see all the different things in the store and try to decide what to buy. We liked seeing how many things we could buy, and if we were able to buy one last thing with the leftover change we had. It was a good experience for us, making decisions and being responsible with money. We learned more about how money works and the type of things we can buy in our community.
Have a nice evening! See you tomorrow!
Love,
