Today, we took a break from our Olympic festivities and celebrated the stars– the Star Festival,  that is!

We had a special guest today–

“It’s H’s mama!” H said proudly when her mommy, R,  appeared on the screen. Pauline then showed us a bamboo branch, which H explained that she made together with her mommy. Pauline asked if we knew what it was- was it part of the Christmas tree? Was it for Halloween? We all said no, and our teachers said that the reason why R was here was to explain to us what the bamboo branch was for. She told us that it was for Tanabata, or the Star Festival. She then showed us a video explaining where the story of Tanabata came from. It was about a princess named Orihime and a prince named Hikoboshi. They were both very hardworking but when they met and fell in love, they both stopped working. This angered the Sky King, who was also Orihime’s father, so he separated the two. Princess Orihime was very sad and begged her father to meet Prince Hikboshi again, so the king decided that they can meet once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month.

During Tanabata, people write their wishes on a tanzaku and hang it on a bamboo tree. Rina kindly prepared the bamboo branch and some colored paper which can be our tanzaku. She also prepared materials so we can decorate the bamboo branch with stars. Our teachers said that tomorrow, we can draw or write our wishes on the tanzaku.

We thanked R for explaining the story of Tanabata to us and bid her goodbye. After that, we told our teachers what our wishes are.

“I wish I had a robot with a tail,” N said. She said she wants her robot to be big.

“I wish.. I had a t- rex,” O said. “A REAL t- rex,” he added.

S said he wanted a car and a train.

“I wish for an elephant… a pink elephant,” C said. She wanted it to be a small elephant.

“I wish it was Christmas because it’s happy,” H said. Pauline agreed as she said Christmas was her favorite holiday!

“Fish,” R said. “Take care of fish– small pink fish,” she added.

“Me blue fish,” L said. “Blue fish to take care of. Small fish,” she added.

“White car,” B said. “Big white car. Like mommy’s car,” he told us.

Speaking of wishes, Pauline read a book called, “I Wish I Had a monster” by Judy Waite.

“Wait… who wishes for a monster?!” Pauline exclaimed. “Do you want to wish for a monster?” she asked us.

“Nooooo….! I don’t want a monster!” O said.

“Scary,” L said.

The book starts with a boy named Max, who was bored and so he said, “I wish I had a monster.” Everytime he described the monster, his daddy kept offering if he wanted other animals instead, like a kitten–

“I want a kitten,” N said. “Kittens are cute,” she told us. We all agreed with her.

— a mouse, a dog, and a rabbit.

“Max said, ‘But rabbits are not scary! I wish I had a scary monster!’” N guessed. Yes, she was right. Max thought the animals that his dad mentioned weren’t scary at all.

“Dog!” S said, as his eyes lit up. “I like dog,” He said. Max described the monster he wants as big, hairy, scary, wild waving legs, yellow teeth, and sharp, spiky bottom. He might as well have been describing a spider, which made Max jump and go “Aaagh!” After that, Max wished for a mouse instead– which he got! The end.

“I want a monster,” O commented after the story.

“Are you sure?” Pauline asked.

“Yeah!” O replied enthusiastically while S shook his head “no” in disagreement.

We got ready for the park after.

“Do you have balls?” N asked. Kai brought the balls with him and we set off for the park. When we got there, unfortunately, there were some people using the green area. The teachers let us  use the slides– and we missed it! We went down with a big “Weeeeee!” as we went down the big yellow slide.

“I go again?” S asked.

“I don’t want to leave yet,” N said.

“I want to go down, down, down…” B told the teachers. Some of our friends had fun playing with Kai on the swings. Before we went back to school, we all used some hand sanitizer.

“Lunch! Lunch!” Sh excitedly said.

“I want to eat my carrots!” O told the teachers. When we got back to school, Cotone mentioned, “Hot!” and we were surprised that Lea took off her socks and shoes!

“It’s so hot and sticky,” L explained. Yes, it was humid but we had so much fun playing out in the park!

That’s all for today– how about you? How was your day?

Love,
